2023 Instructor Survey

How would you rate your experience as an instructor? *

It was a truly great experience. I had a very good experience. I would say it was fair to good. It was rather disappointing. I had a terrible time.

Did you look forward to being with your students? *

Teaching them sailing was the highlight of my day! For the most part I enjoyed being with them. Being with them was good, depending on how I felt. I wasn't that motivated to be there. I would rather have stayed in bed.

How motivated do you tend to be? *

I am a true self-starter and like to get things done. I am a team player and help out whenever I can. I will pitch in whenever I am asked to. I shy away from being involved. I'd rather be left alone.

Which three qualities do you believe are very important? *

Being competent, dedicated and determined. Being a leader, a good listener and a problem solver. Being a role model, a team player and well respected. Being responsible, resourceful and reliable. Being enthusiastic, outgoing and charismatic.

Which activity do you see as the best opportunity for growth as an instructor? *

Learning through a formal instructor training course Learning through the casual observation of others Learning by making repeated mistakes Learning by taking chances and by trial and error Learning through an honest, personal self-reflection

Whom would you consider to be a challenging student? *

Someone who doesn't listen and follow directions Someone who struggles with learning the material Someone who is a behavioral problem Someone who is a teacher's pet and seeks attention Someone who is not very enthusiastic or motivated

Which of the following do you consider to be the most effective way to engage the students? *

Plan activities that they are sure to like. Use their names, go up to them and call on them. Make the activities fun and educational. Require them to participate every day. Let them decide what they want to do.

What would you consider to be an indication that a student was successful in class? *

He/she achieved all of the skills of the course. He/she had an overall positive experience. He/she plans to take another sailing class. He/she recommended the class to a friend. He/she felt a sense of accomplishment.

What kind of relationship do you feel is most important between instructors? *

We are there to support and learn from each other. We should be independent thinkers and doers. We should ask each other for help and advice. We should limit our reliance on each other. We should report concerns about fellow instructors.

What do you think should be the role of the Program Director? *

Be completely in charge of the entire program. Include the instructors when making decisions. Be a reliable resource only when needed. Do not interfere with daily planning and operations. Be an equal and integral member of the entire staff.
